Definition of Skin Diseases and Causes

Approximately 15-20 million people older than 50 years with stasis dermatitis in the United States.
The very signs of Stasis Dermatitis can be seen by swelling in the lower legs.
Sometimes dark shaded spots will appear around the ankle area. This is an early sign of future stasis problems that can result into stasis ulcers.
Stasis Dermatitis can also appear as a bright red rash that usually shows up in the front area ( shin area ) of the lower legs. This rash can be painful with burning and stinging sensations. Many doctors recommend Vaseline to be applied to the rash. This may help keep the rash moist and may help with some of the stinging sensation, but does nothing to help deal with the rash.
Swollen, itchy, discolored skin on the lower legs is often the result of stasis dermatitis. As the body ages, the micro- scopic blood vessels, called capillaries, that feed the skin become weakened as a result of age and a continuous fight against gravity. Ultimately, the skin ceases to receive the required oxygen and nutrients it requires. Also, it is unable to get rid of the waste products that accumulate in the tissue. As this occurs, the skin begins to break down, resulting in symptoms such as itching, tingling or soreness and hard crusty skin.
Our legs are created with a one way valve system. The purpose of this one way valve is to control the amount of blood going down into the legs allowing the blood to circulate back.
Due to aging, poor health, and sometimes disease this valve will deteriorate. At this point there is no control of the blood flow that goes into the lower legs and feet. This is why an individual with Stasis Dermatitis will notice a reddening of the feet and toes. This is caused by blood settling in the feet and not circulating back up the leg. This is why doctors will recommend legs raised while sitting and pillow beneath the legs while sleeping in order to help the blood flow back up the legs. Pain is associated with this condition. Individuals with heart problems such as congestive heart failure will find stasis problems in the legs to be more difficult due to poor blood flow. This also holds true for people who are diabetic with circulatory problems in the lower legs.

Diabetic Foot Ulcers
People with diabetes have poor blood
flow in their hands and feet. They also
tend to have a decreased sensation to
pain. These two factors combined with
an outside factor such as shoes that
rub on a certain spot over time and cause the skin to break down
can lead to a wound that is difficult to heal. Even insect bites such
as flea or mosquito bites, scratches and bruising can result in
non-healing leg and foot ulcers.
Important skin function is lost due to poor circulation. The lack of
circulation means the lack of nutrition to the skin layers of the foot
that would normally come through the blood stream. This can also
result in vascular disease.
Fatty acids help to provide nutrition to the skin layers. Studies
show that applying fatty acids to the skin layers help promote
circulation. Once increased circulation is achieved, it becomes
easier to close diabetic foot ulcers. A continued use of a fatty acid
topical application will help to maintain preventive care of the skin
and help to maintain a certain amount of circulation, which is
important. Diabetic Shoes are recommended for added
protection.

Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is a
peripheral nerve disorder
caused by diabetes. The
symptoms of diabetic
neuropathy can be numb
ness, pain, or tingling in
the feet or legs. After
several years it can lead
to weakness in the muscles
of the feet. Occasionally,
diabetic neuropathy can flare
up suddenly and affect
specific nerves so that an
affected individual will
develop double vision,
drooping eyelids, or weak-
ness of the thigh muscles.
Nerve damage caused by
diabetes generally occurs
over a period of years and
may lead to problems with
the digestive tract and
sexual organs, which can cause indigestion, diarrhea or
constipation, dizziness, bladder infections, and impotence. The
loss of sensation in the feet may increase the possibility for foot
injuries to go unnoticed and develop into ulcers or lesions that
become infected.
The painful sensations of diabetic neuropathy can be severe and
cause depression in some patients.
Important Note: The symptoms of diabetic neuropathy are
preventable with a simple application of a fatty acid ( emu oil )
based product. This application will help to promote circulation
in the lower legs and feet. This, in turn, protects the integrity of
the skin layers. The same application is recommended for
prevention of diabetic ulcers.
If you are diabetic and you feel that you may have neuropathy
and numbness due to circulatory problems you should see
your doctor.
